In Greek mythology, the centaurs (from Ancient Greek:- Kantauroi) are a race of creatures composed of part human and part horse. In early Attic vase-paintings, they are depicted with the torso of a human joined at the waist to the horse`s withers, where the horse`s neck would be. This half-human and half-animal composition has led many writers to treat them as liminal beings, caught between the two natures, embodied in contrasted myths, both as the embodiment of untamed nature, as in their battle with the Lapiths, or conversely as teachers, like Chiron. The centaurs were usually said to have been born of Ixion and Nephele (the cloud made in the image of Hera). Another version, however, makes them children of a certain Centaurus, who mated with the Magnesian mares. This Centaurus was either the son of Ixion and Nephele (instead of the Centaurs) or of Apollo and Stilbe, daughter of the river god Peneus. In the latter version of the story his twin brother was Lapithus, ancestor of the Lapiths, thus making the two warring peoples cousins. Centaurs were said to have inhabited the region of Magnesia and Mount Pelion in Thessaly, Mount Pholoe in Arcadia and the Malean peninsula in southern Laconia. Centaurs continued to figure in literary forms of Roman mythology. This sculpture was created using the lostwax method. It is on a black marble base. It is signed by B. Alexander the Great, one of the greatest military intellects in history, conquered much of was what was then the civilised world. Taught by his tutor Aristotle to believe that the Greeks were the most advanced people in the world, Alexander created a huge empire, encompassing Macedonia, Egypt, Syria, Persia and Asia Minor. Alexander the Great was born in 356 BC in Pella the ancient capital of Macedonia. Alexander was the son of Philip II, king of Macedonia, and Olympias a princess of Epirus. Alexander had a very close relationship to his mother Olympias and this may have affected his future relationships with women. Although Alexander did marry and have a son, it is believed that Alexander also a relationships with his closest male friend Hephaestion. This relationship was a source of intense jealousy to his mother Olympias. Alexander married his first wife, Roxane in 327. She was a princess of Sogdiana (now Uzbekistan). When Alexander died in On June 11 323 she was pregnant. Alexander also had a second wife, Statira. Alexander was a military genius and greatly admired by his troops for his leadership and courage. Alexander proudly led his troops into battle on his mighty horse Bucephalus. On conquering Egypt he was declared a Pharaoh and a god. The Egyptians hailed him as their liberator and he was crowned with the traditional double crown of the pharaohs of Egypt. He was given the salutation of'”a son of Amon”. Two cities founded by Alexander were Alexandria in Egypt and Bucephala in India. This is certainly a reproduction and it is made at my Art Studio in Sydney, Australia!
