It depicts an iconic Art deco dancer in motion with one of her legs kicked upward and one hand to each side. The nude dancer wears only an undergarment, yet exhibits such grace in her movement. Notice the fine detail to her face and the subtle muscular definition of her body – her stomach, knees, back and spine. Her bobbed hairdo is certainly reminiscent of the Flapper style. The bronze is patinated with a handsome brown color. The sculpture is further enhanced by the tiered square base, combining black marble. The piece is signed on the base Balleste. This large heavy bronze is entitled’Phoenician Dancer’ and was sculpted by Demetre Chiparus. Chiparus’ work was heavily influenced in the 1920s by the art of ancient Egypt and the unveiling of King Tutankhamen tomb. You can see the creativity and the inspiration of the Egyptian art in this piece. She extends her arms out and poses in a theatrical pose. She stands on her toes and dances with her legs close together and bent. This is an extremely detailed piece right down to the tone of her stomach muscles. This sculpture was handmade and has a brown patina. It is signed Chiparus and is mounted on an art deco styled black marble base. Demetre Haralamb Chiparus (also known as Dumitru Chiparus; 16 September 1886, Dorohoi, Romania – 22 January 1947, Paris, France) was a Romanian Art Deco era sculptor who lived and worked in Paris. He was born in Romania, the son of Haralamb and Saveta. In 1909 he went to Italy, where he attended the classes of Italian sculptor Raffaello Romanelli. In 1912 he traveled to Paris to attend the Ecole des Beaux Arts to pursue his art at the classes of Antonin Mercie and Jean Boucher. Demetre Chiparus died in 1947 and was buried in Bagneux cemetery, just south of Paris.
