The model for this essentially realistic work is known to have been Marie Van Goethem. Born on June 7, 1865, she was a student at the école de Danse in Paris, and by 1880 she had been engaged as a dancer at the Opéra. The care with which Degas observed his model is reflected not only in the sculpture itself, but also in the unusual number of surviving sketches of the model in charcoal and pastel, as well as in a preparatory sculptural study of the figure in the nude. The title, The Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer (Petite danseuse de quatorze ans), given to the original mixed-media sculpture when it was exhibited by Degas in the sixth Impressionist exhibition held in Paris in 1881, provides the most solid evidence for the sculpture’s date. She stands on her tip toes as she outstretches her arms to hold up a beautiful arrangement of flowers. The flowers are strung together beautifully and she holds them up as if she is offering them to a someone. Her dress has exquisite detail; flowers cover her breasts and are seen on the pattern of the dress as well. The dress has a solid trim which has round studs on it. You can see this around the neck and arms as well as the bottom part of the dress. It looks almost as if the trim has a fringe at the bottom. She wears a very detailed head piece which falls down to her shoulders farming her face. Her sandals are remarkable with the utmost detail. The strap around her ankle and foot with a leather like fabric around the foot, even her toes are exquisite.
