Like the paintings, this bronze shows an idealized view of the real crossing that Napoleon’s army made through the St. Bernard Pass in 1800, which enabled the French to surprise the Austrian army and win victory at the Battle of Marengo in June of 1800. As in David’s paintings, this bronze references Hannibal (Annibal), the great Carthaginian general who marched into the Italian peninsula during the Second Punic War and won a great battle against the Romans. Napoleon was known to have quoted Hannibal and likened his attack on the Austrians to Hannibal’s attack upon the Romans. She Stand atop a beautiful detailed rose, she has nohands her arms cut off by where her elbows are suppose to be and she has fins on both sides. She stands on her legs which extend out behind her knees as two separate mermaid fins, she also has these two head pieces sort of like a yamaka. She is nude with a graceful smile upon her face, her hair is twisted and spread like two low pig tales and each side wraps round the top of her arms.
