An adaptable, generalist species, the mountain lion is found in every major American habitat type. It is the second heaviest cat in the American continents after the jaguar. Although large, the mountain lion is most closely related to smaller felines. They prefer habitats with dense underbrush and rocky areas for stalking their prey, but they can also live in open areas. Like almost all cats, the mountain lion is a solitary animal. They are secretive and crepuscular, being most active around dawn and dusk.
