In Greek mythology, the centaurs (from Ancient Greek:- Kantauroi) are a race of creatures composed of part human and part horse. In early Attic vase-paintings, they are depicted with the torso of a human joined at the waist to the horse`s withers, where the horse`s neck would be. This half-human and half-animal composition has led many writers to treat them as liminal beings, caught between the two natures, embodied in contrasted myths, both as the embodiment of untamed nature, as in their battle with the Lapiths, or conversely as teachers, like Chiron. The centaurs were usually said to have been born of Ixion and Nephele (the cloud made in the image of Hera). Another version, however, makes them children of a certain Centaurus, who mated with the Magnesian mares. This Centaurus was either the son of Ixion and Nephele (instead of the Centaurs) or of Apollo and Stilbe, daughter of the river god Peneus. In the latter version of the story his twin brother was Lapithus, ancestor of the Lapiths, thus making the two warring peoples cousins. Centaurs were said to have inhabited the region of Magnesia and Mount Pelion in Thessaly, Mount Pholoe in Arcadia and the Malean peninsula in southern Laconia. Centaurs continued to figure in literary forms of Roman mythology. This sculpture was created using the lostwax method. It is on a black marble base. It is signed by B. Marble Dimensions: Diameter 8. Height without base: 23. This famous piece entitled “Descending Night” was crafted by German sculptor, Adolph A. It depicts a beautiful nude angel. Her head tilted downward, her fingers are combing through her hair that cascades in soft waves down her back. Crafted with exquisite detail, the angels wings spread wide from her back. The body features a very feminine angel with distinctive curves and lines that define womanhood. “Descending Night”, and its companion work, “Rising Day” were originally designed as fountain figures fort he 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. Following the exhibition, Weinman reproduced both works in two sizes, one measuring approximately 24 inches tall and the other approximately 57 inches. Weinman won many awards during his life, including the Fine Arts Medal of the American Institute of Architects (1930), the Honorary Presidency and Medal of Honor of the National Sculpture Society (1948), and Gold Medal from the Architectural League of New York (1913), Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1924), and the National Academy of Design (1945). He also served as president of the National Sculpture Society from 1928 to 1931, and was a member of the New York City Art Commission from 1924 to 1928, and the National Commission of Fine Arts from 1928 to 1932. In 1911, he was elected a full member of the National Academy of Design, and was later a member of the American Numismatic Society and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Weinman died at Port Chester, New York, on August 8, 1952 after an outstanding career bringing honor to himself and his adopted country. Virgin Islands, however, an additional charge may be required. Hand Made Genuine Solid Bronze Nude Female Angel Woman Bronze Sculpture. This sculpture is in perfect condition. Bronze Dimensions with Marble Base:Height 24″ x Width 18″. Marble Dimensions: Diameter 8. Height without base: 23. This famous piece entitled “Descending Night” was crafted by German sculptor, Adolph A. It depicts a beautiful nude angel. Her head tilted downward, her fingers are combing through her hair that cascades in soft waves down her back. Crafted with exquisite detail, the angels wings spread wide from her back. The body features a very feminine angel with distinctive curves and lines that define womanhood. “Descending Night”, and its companion work, “Rising Day” were originally designed as fountain figures fort he 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. Following the exhibition, Weinman reproduced both works in two sizes, one measuring approximately 24 inches tall and the other approximately 57 inches. Weinman won many awards during his life, including the Fine Arts Medal of the American Institute of Architects (1930), the Honorary Presidency and Medal of Honor of the National Sculpture Society (1948), and Gold Medal from the Architectural League of New York (1913), Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1924), and the National Academy of Design (1945). He also served as president of the National Sculpture Society from 1928 to 1931, and was a member of the New York City Art Commission from 1924 to 1928, and the National Commission of Fine Arts from 1928 to 1932. In 1911, he was elected a full member of the National Academy of Design, and was later a member of the American Numismatic Society and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Weinman died at Port Chester, New York, on August 8, 1952 after an outstanding career bringing honor to himself and his adopted country. Virgin Islands, however, an additional charge may be required.
