Like the paintings, this bronze shows an idealized view of the real crossing that Napoleon’s army made through the St. Bernard Pass in 1800, which enabled the French to surprise the Austrian army and win victory at the Battle of Marengo in June of 1800. As in David’s paintings, this bronze references Hannibal (Annibal), the great Carthaginian general who marched into the Italian peninsula during the Second Punic War and won a great battle against the Romans. Napoleon was known to have quoted Hannibal and likened his attack on the Austrians to Hannibal’s attack upon the Romans. This is a bronze limited edition honoring the French commanding martial giant Napoleon Bonaparte (15 August 1769 – 5 May 1821). As Napoleon I, he was Emperor of the French from 1804 to 1815. His legal reconstruction, the Napoleonic code, has been a major influence on many civil law administrations worldwide, but he is best remembered for the wars he led against a series of coalitions, the so-called Napoleonic Wars, during which he established dominion over much of Europe and sought to spread revolutionary ideals. The beholder witnesses him standing straight ahead with proudness, his fanning fortune after all, finally defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in June of 1815. The sculpture was cast using the archaic method of lost-wax casting and stained with a brown patina finish for perpetuation, and is signed and numbered by artist Milo.
