This sculpture of large life size owl is scary but amazingly stunning with its owl wings spread fully as is he just landed on this broken tree trunk. The owl has large downward-facing eyes, a hawk-like beak and a flat face; and his conspicuous circle of feathers are beautiful.. Most birds of prey sport eyes on the sides of their heads, but the stereoscopic nature of the owl’s forward-facing eyes permits the greater sense of depth perception necessary for low-light hunting. Although owls have binocular vision. Their large eyes are fixed in their sockets? As are those of other birds? So they must turn their entire head to change views. Owls can rotate their heads and necks as much as 270 degrees in either direction. As owls are farsighted, they are unable to see clearly anything within a few centimeters of their eyes. The Pietà (14981499) is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture by CBuonarroti, housed in St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. It is the first of a number of works of the same theme by the artist. The statue was commissioned for the French cardinal Jean de Billheres, who was a representative in Rome. The sculpture, in Carrara marble, was made for the cardinal’s funeral monument, but was moved to its current location, the first chapel on the right as one enters the basilica, in the 18th century. It is the only piece Michelangelo ever signed (See History after completion). This famous work of art depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the Crucifixion. The theme is of Northern origin, popular by that time in France but not yet in Italy. Michelangelo’s interpretation of the Pietà is unique to the precedents. It is an important work as it balances the Renaissance ideals of classical beauty with naturalism. The statue is one of the most highly finished works by Michelangelo. Kronos is the son of Ouranos and Gaea, the youngest of the Titans. Cronos overthrew his father, with the help of his mother, and became the supreme ruler of the universe. He then married Rhea, his sister, who gave birth to the great Gods. To prevent the reocurrence of his father’s fate, he swallowed each of his children as they were born. However, when his last son, Zeus, was born, Rhea hid the infant on the island of Crete, and instead gave Kronos a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes. When Zeus became old enough, he challenged his father, and forced him to vomit up his siblings Poseidon, Hades, Demeter, Hera and Hestia. The Cyclopse, who were freed by Zeus, fashioned the famous thunderbolts and lightning for Zeus as a sign of gratitude. These weapons were instrumental in the defeat of the Titans (in a battle known as teh Titanomachy) by Zeus and his siblings. 100% bronze and handmade. This sculpture was cast using the “Lost Wax Method” in a brown patina. It is mounted on a oval black marble base and is signed by artist Milo. The model for this essentially realistic work is known to have been Marie Van Goethem. Born on June 7, 1865, she was a student at the école de Danse in Paris, and by 1880 she had been engaged as a dancer at the Opéra. The care with which Degas observed his model is reflected not only in the sculpture itself, but also in the unusual number of surviving sketches of the model in charcoal and pastel, as well as in a preparatory sculptural study of the figure in the nude. The title, The Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer (Petite danseuse de quatorze ans), given to the original mixed-media sculpture when it was exhibited by Degas in the sixth Impressionist exhibition held in Paris in 1881, provides the most solid evidence for the sculpture’s date. The sculpture was molded by using the lost-wax casting method. This is an exquisite three-dimensional work of art for anyone who is Degas enthusiast.
