Height without base:11. 1499 is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture by CBuonarroti, housed in St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. It is the first of a number of works of the same theme by the artist. The statue was commissioned for the French cardinal Jean de Billheres, who was a representative in Rome. The sculpture, in Carrara marble, was made for the cardinal’s funeral monument, but was moved to its current location, the first chapel on the right as one enters the basilica, in the 18th century. The owl has large downward-facing eyes, a hawk-like beak and a flat face; and his conspicuous circle of feathers are beautiful.. Most birds of prey sport eyes on the sides of their heads, but the stereoscopic nature of the owl’s forward-facing eyes permits the greater sense of depth perception necessary for low-light hunting. Although owls have binocular vision. Their large eyes are fixed in their sockets as are those of other birds so they must turn their entire head to change views.
